In the heart of the Kingdom of Kerry, by the Caragh River unspoiled by the passage of time lies Glencar House Hotel whose 300 year tradition of hospitality is as old as the trees beside it.
The Glencar House Hotel offers a variety of leisure activities from world class salmon fishing and golf to walking, climbing and pony trekking. The hotel boasts panoramic views of the valley, woods and MacGillicuddy's Reeks home to Carrauntuohil Ireland's highest mountain.
Glencar House was built in 1670 as a hunting lodge by the Earl of Landsdowne, William Petty. By the 1780s the hotel was sold to a wealthy Irish landowner. It remained in the family's care until 1989. |
Traditions are strong in Glencar, as they are in most rural communities and time moves slowly. But as Kerry and Glencar changed so did the hotel. Although used as a fishing and hunting lodge since its inception the Hotel has, over the years, been home to both Post Office and Public Bar. The Post Office was transferred but the wonderful warm hospitality of the Pub and the mighty craic (fun) remain fully operational. Today Glencar House Hotel enjoys the distinction of being the oldest and one of the great fishing houses of Ireland, one of those grand "Old World Hotels". |
"Halfway to Heaven", a mysterious setting, a place of perfect peace. With 20 en-suite bedrooms, fireside dining room and sunny conservatory garden dining room overlooking forest, mountains and 2 Ogham stones - thought to be five thousand years old. Relaxing lounge bar with turf burning fireplace.
Professional pool room and library with fireplace, guest lounge with fireplace and surrounding 2 sides of the building sunny conservatories for relaxing and enjoying after noon teas.
Nestled in the heart of "the Kingdom of Kerry", in the foothills of Ireland's tallest mountain, Carrantouhill, Glencar sits in 13 acres of unspoiled primeval oak woods. |
With sylvan vista extending over yet more hectares of unpolluted wild natural woodlands, open bog and mountains. Also abuntant in and around Glencar, are its famous lakes (Loughs), streams and rivers bursting with salmon and trout. The "Kerry Way", Ireland's premiere long distance walking route, winds past the Hotel grounds and offers easy access to shorter walks.
The Caragh river and Lake, on our door step, is one of Europe's cleanest and Ireland's best Salmon areas. Five of Ireland's best golf links and courses set in parklands, woods, sandy beaches, lie within twenty minutes of the Hotel. |
