Fishing in Ireland
Ireland's position on the western seaboard of Europe together with its pristine lakes and rivers makes Ireland a paradise for sea and fresh water anglers alike.
Ireland gets prolific runs of Atlantic salmon, and the numerous lakes, rivers and streams also offer many a relaxing day to those fishing for trout. The main species fished in Ireland are Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout. Most rivers and lakes in Ireland have one or all of these species.
Permits, licenses, and specific information can be obtained from local operators or the Central Fisheries Board. In general to fish Brown Trout you don't need a license, but if you want to fish for Salmon or Sea Trout you will need to obtain a license. For private fisheries you will also need a permit. In each case it pays to check with the local tourist office, Garda (Police) or fishing outfitters.
